The smoothie that literally tastes like a chocolate milkshake. I know, I know, you’re probably thinking I’m crazy. Chocolate milkshake and green smoothie in the same sentence? How could a green smoothie possibly taste good…let alone like chocolate? Read below to find the green smoothie recipe that is so good I literally CRAVE it, and why it’s so good for you!
The recipe:
Produce:
2 frozen ripe bananas (the more ripe the sweeter they’ll be)
2 handfuls of baby spinach (washed)
1/2 ripe avocado
Liquids:
10oz almond milk (I use original unsweetened)
Other:
1 scoop chocolate plant protein powder
1 tablespoon cacao powder
1 scoop Amazing Grass Green Superfood powder in chocolate
Key Ingredient Benefits
Spinach:
Out of all of the leafy greens, spinach is my favorite. It also happens to be one of the most nutrient packed as well! Not only does it have many different vitamins in it, but it is also extremely high in fiber and a great source of protein as well. Spinach is known to promote healthy vision, healthy brain function, healthy skin, and helps to fight bodily infections. There are so many reasons why we should be eating spinach everyday. It is truly a superfood!
Avocado:
Avocados are sooooo so delicious and even better for you! There are so many ways that they can be used in recipes as well. They are extremely high in omega-3 and are high in fiber. They contain good, healthy fats which should be included in your daily diet. Avocados contain more nutrients than some fruits, and help our bodies absorb more nutrients in general! They are also a key agent to glowing skin and shiny hair! Using avocado in this smoothie recipe is what gives it a creamy consistency, and you can’t even taste it at all.. win win.
Cacao powder:
There is a HUGE difference between “cocoa” and “cacao” powder. You may have heard of cocoa powder before, or more often then cacao powder. Cocoa powder is known to be used in things like candy bars, brownie mix, hot chocolate, and many more. It is a baking agent that is usually highly processed, full of sugar and is heat refined- which means it has been stripped of it’s nutrients. This is how a superfood becomes a NOT-so-superfood!
Cacao on the other hand, is a raw chocolate superfood. Ever heard the saying that chocolate is actually good for you? That’s where cacao comes in. This type of chocolate is unrefined, and actually contains vitamins and minerals. It is also very high in antioxidants, helping to improve brain function, promote heart health, aid in weight loss, promote healthy skin, and can even enhance your mood! Not to mention, unlike processed chocolate, it is much more rich and tasty. I’ll take the ladder please.
Whey protein:
I always like to add a little bit of protein into my smoothies. This brand is great! I have both vanilla and chocolate flavors, but for this recipe I like to use chocolate. Using whey protein will help promote muscle and bone health, promote weight loss, improve your immune system, and help or even prevent diabetes. I love using whey protein because it kind of gives for a whipped or more creamy consistency. This is what helps the smoothie turn into more of a milkshake! It is vital for me to add this to mine- the secret ingredient!
Superfood powder:
This powder is the reason I started making this smoothie! I had heard before that green superfood powders are so good for you and it is something you should try to include in your diet very often. I found this one in particular, through YouTube beauty blogger Roxette Arisa. Thank you Roxette for this amazing and delicious find! This brand in particular carries their green superfoods in several different flavors, so you just might find the one that’s right for you! But seriously, who doesn’t love chocolate…
Chlorella and Spirulina:
Amongst the many ingredients in this superfood including non-gmo wheat grass, barley grass, alfalfa, spinach and broccoli, chlorella and spirulina are also tossed in that mix. These two are the ones that stand out to to me most. Both of these ingredients are extreme superfoods packed with iron and nutrients. They are anti-inflammatory, and antifungal. Spirulina is a great source of protein, helping to increase energy and also detoxifying heavy metals in the body. Chlorella will help to speed up muscle recovery, aid in digestion, support your immune system and also promote energy.
Why I love it
Overall, this smoothie has so many benefits to your health, which is why I love to start my day off with it. I truly crave it! It is very filling, and seriously gives me a boost of energy, which we all need during the work week! Despite the list of ingredients, this smoothie only takes me about 3-5 minutes to make, making it so easy when you’re running out the door. I literally just throw it all in my blender and let it do it’s thing!
